Author’s Rationale
I have some background in politics, so I was fascinated and flummoxed by the decision of the British people to leave the EU and four decades of their history behind them. I got to thinking about how such a decision, which confounded all the experts, could be taken. Politics and Government is a funny business, as are all the organisations, interest groups and individuals that give it life and impetus – the individuals that want or need something, the national, international and supranational organisations that get involved, all complicated by individual countries that pile in to the decision making, believing they have vital interests at stake.
As I thought about the decision making process involved, it led me to believe there was a book in it. I like satire and my writing ‘voice’ tends towards it. I decided to give expression to all that I felt about the decision and the complicated interest groups involved and how they may have viewed the sudden change in national strategy. Shortly after the vote, I started to write. I finished before year end.
The Brexit Conspiracies is my take on the formal and informal links, plans and conspiracies that led to the vote and the possible final outcome. It speculates about how differing interest groups might believe they might have had something to gain from the unforeseen forces let loose.
I should emphasise, that it’s a viewpoint, a very personal one, and it’s purely imagined. It’s just a story but one that I hope you find entertaining.
The Story
Alex Snark, an American émigré and political consultant, the objectionable no holds barred protagonist, is the mastermind behind the winning of the UK referendum. He follows that success with a carefully chosen candidate for the Party leadership. He becomes Chief of Staff in Number Ten. Together, he and the prime minister carefully plot their initial contact with everyone from the civil service to the European bureaucracy.
The Brexit Conspiracies is a high concept novel of political intrigue. The action swings from Downing Street to Brussels, from Canary Wharf to Basel and from Frankfurt to D.C. In a fast paced story set amid the Brexit crisis, various intergovernmental conspiracies and personal rivalries are revealed. A range of powerful world figures are determined that Britain’s exit will not be smooth. The President of the EU has his eyes fixed on becoming President of France. A grouping of large European banks, backed by Russian oligarchs, is intent on eating Britain’s lunch by stealing its City base.
In the high pressure, high stakes, world facing Snark and the PM, the dangers they can see are like ice bergs, nine tenths hidden below the surface. Corruption, ambition and financial intrigue are arrayed against Britain as it seeks to negotiate its exit from its decades’ long union. There is no help from old friends. POTUS in D.C. is up for election and is unable to openly intervene in a disintegrating world order. The Downing Street team must negotiate its way through countless difficulties and face down a plethora of powerful forces as it plots a shock and awe solution to resolving the Brexit negotiations.
